Millennium Sculpture
1999 • Burlington, Vermont

The future is a collection of past events building upon themselves, moving forward in time. With this in mind the millennium sculpture is an installation that is a graceful landmark for the city of Burlington, relevant to the site and its vicinity, with consideration of the past, looking towards the future with a quiet reminder that time is always moving forward.

In Burlington City Park, the millennium sculpture is a tall stainless steel steeple approximately 27 feet high. The steeple is supported by four carved, Vermont, gray, granite columns. Centered in the steeple will be a motor driven pendulum that sounds a low soft tone as the pendulum swings. The sound will serve as a reminder that time is ceaselessly moving forward and will only be audible when you are standing quite near suggestive of the way time quietly ticks away. The space below the steeple is wide enough to allow only one person to enter and peer up into the pendulum. At the same moment as you stand under the tower you are standing on the copper plate which houses the time capsule and the messages for the new millennium.

Steeples and spires give the city of Burlington and many towns in Vermont their own identification as glorious Vermont landmarks. This steeple fits contextually into the sequence of spires existing in the city of Burlington and yet, unique in its severity, it will stand out with its brightly polished surface reflecting the sun, the shadows, and the clouds with a gentle reminder that time moves on as the new millennium commences.
